Dojo crest and calligraphy preparation

Many school crests began as an embroidered patch or a brush drawing, and the only copy left is a photo. Dojo Award Studio checks that artwork at the size it will be engraved and prepares a clean line version when the original is too small, too soft or too detailed.

What if our dojo crest only exists as a uniform patch?

Photograph the patch flat, in even light, and send it to Dojo Award Studio with any older printed version you can find. We assess whether it can be traced as it is, simplified or redrawn. You compare the prepared artwork with the original, stroke by stroke, before it is used on any plaque or trophy.

Why does a crest with calligraphy need extra care?

Picture students ordering a Dojo Recognition & Instructor Plaque for a teacher who is retiring from the school he founded. They want his crest above the dedication: a circle, a tiger and two brush-written characters. The clearest source they have is the patch on a uniform. Embroidery rounds every corner, and the direction of the thread hides where a brush stroke starts and ends. A redraw that guesses can turn a character into a different one, or into nothing. So we trace the circle and the tiger, and ask for the characters as typed text or a clean scan from the school's letterhead. A senior student who reads them signs off the proof before the plate is engraved.

Choose who is presenting the gift: one class, the teaching team or the wider dojo. A specific line about patience, mentorship or commitment makes the plaque more personal than a list of class times or titles.

The details to personalize: instructor, message, presented by, year. The product page lets you enter them and carry the design into your quote request.

How is a school crest made ready for engraving?

01

Search for the oldest clean copy

Ask the patch supplier, the sign maker or whoever printed the school's first flyers. An original drawing or a print file is a far stronger starting point than a photo of stitched fabric.

02

Mark what must not change

Tell us which elements carry meaning: the characters, the animal, the number of petals or stripes. Fine borders, shading and small mottos may need thinning out at plate size, and we show you what is proposed.

03

Have a reader check the characters

Before approving, ask someone who reads the language to check every stroke against the source. The approved file stays with your order, so later rank plaques and trophies reuse one verified crest.

Questions about dojo crest and calligraphy preparation

What if our dojo crest only exists as a uniform patch?

Photograph the patch flat, in even light, and send it to Dojo Award Studio with any older printed version you can find. We assess whether it can be traced as it is, simplified or redrawn. You compare the prepared artwork with the original, stroke by stroke, before it is used on any plaque or trophy.

Can you write our school name in Japanese or Korean for us?

No. Dojo Award Studio prepares artwork you supply; it does not translate or compose text in another language. Ask your head instructor or your parent organization for the correct characters, typed or scanned. We then set them at plaque size and return a proof for a fluent reader to check.

Is redrawing a crest covered by the product estimate?

No. Tracing or redrawing a crest is extra design work, quoted as its own line, and the scope is agreed before the artwork is used. If a patch photo cannot be recovered reliably, we say so and describe what kind of source would work, such as a printed flyer or the embroiderer's file.

Can an association or federation logo go on the plaque?

Only with that organization's permission. A rank plaque records what the school awarded, and adding another body's mark suggests an affiliation. If permission exists, send the organization's own file. If it does not, keep to the school crest and name, which the school controls.
