Rank and Division Line Length Checker
Put each line of the inscription on its own row, set the number of characters you will allow per line, and press check. Dojo Award Studio built the checker to count every letter, space and bracket and to flag the rows that run over. It is a drafting aid for rank and division wording. Real fit is judged on a proof drawn at actual size.
Build your plan
Counts include spaces and punctuation. Character count cannot establish physical fit: font, script, layout, material and engraving area require a proof at actual size.
The decision behind a martial arts division award order
Placement awards, rank recognition and instructor appreciation need different wording. A division name should be understood by the recipient after the event, including the approved discipline and level where needed. Confirm medal sets and presentation plaques as separate quantities.
Keep with your brief: Discipline, division, placement and approved rank wording.

35 characters across 3 lines. Longest line: 20 characters. Line 1: 11 — within your chosen budget Line 2: 20 — within your chosen budget Line 3: 4 — within your chosen budget This is a text count, not a physical fit approval.

Visible characters per line, including spaces and punctuation; longest line compared with your chosen budget
A line marked within budget still needs a production proof. A narrow inscription area, a wide font, a logo beside the text or a different script can change the usable layout. Send the exact text together with the intended product and dimensions so those choices can be considered together.
What happens when a rank title runs long?
An instructor is wording a Black Belt Achievement Plaque. Her school writes the new rank as Shodan (First Degree Black Belt), all on one line. She sets a budget of thirty characters and pastes the text. The checker counts thirty-two, two over. She splits it: Shodan on one line at six characters, First Degree Black Belt beneath it at twenty-three. Both pass. Her instructor message, Earned through patience and effort, comes to thirty-four, so she moves the last two words to a new line. She sends the stacked version to Dojo Award Studio and asks for the same line breaks on every black belt plaque this year.
Check these details before using the result
- Abbreviating a rank to fit
- Do not shorten a rank title on your own. Ask the head instructor which form is correct, or move part of it to a second line.
- Checking names but not division labels
- A label such as Junior Black Belt Weapons Forms is longer than most names. Paste the longest division in the event as well.
- Counting characters in another script
- Kanji or hangul lines are artwork, not typed text, on most pieces. A character count will not predict how they fit; the proof will.

Belt Rank Plaque
Use the exact rank terminology your school awards. A promotion plaque records an achievement; if you want to display a physical belt as well, specify its folded dimensions and request a holder in the design.

Martial Arts Tournament Trophy
Separate forms, sparring and other categories exactly as your event lists them. Include the age or rank division when it distinguishes the result, and avoid combining several placements into one ambiguous title.

Black Belt Achievement Plaque
Confirm the rank notation with the instructor and retain the school's spelling of the discipline. Choose a brief dedication that reflects the student's work rather than adding credentials or affiliations that are not part of the award.

Dojo Recognition & Instructor Plaque
Choose who is presenting the gift: one class, the teaching team or the wider dojo. A specific line about patience, mentorship or commitment makes the plaque more personal than a list of class times or titles.

How long can a rank line be on a plaque?
No single figure applies. Plate width, typeface and letter height all differ by design. Set yourself a working limit, draft to it, and treat the proof as the real test. It helps to send the longest student name and the longest rank title in the grading, because the layout gets built around that pair.
Do parentheses and hyphens count toward the total?
Yes. Spaces, parentheses, hyphens and apostrophes are all counted as characters. A double-barreled surname, or a rank followed by its translation in brackets, grows fast. Paste the wording exactly as the school prints it, since retyping from memory is how a missing hyphen reaches the proof.
Which buying guide should you read next?
All buying guidesCoordinate a multi-dojo order through one shared item schedule, with separate rank approvals, exact names, destination quantities and receiving owners for every location.
A personalized header names the display; a complete belt rack must also provide the approved belt-holding components and mounting arrangement. Compare the complete included scope.
